I think my expectations have been so tossed out the window that I didn't even bother to tune into anything this year. I would think it would be cool if they could either get a real standing in some of these events and show the live acts on TV, or even just get some local DJs going and play music into the night on the TV like I would see them do on some UK channels. ![]() I mean, even after they ring in midnight in Chicago, the networks then either switch over to the party in LA and wait for their midnight, or go back to regular programming. It's not like we are doing some kind of active Chicago thing on any of the networks for hours on end. Then you have the TV networks that pretty much keep us in Times Square all the way up until 11:00 p.m., then giving the news one hour to do whatever until midnight. ![]() I give credit to the smarter people that go to some of those restaurant parties where they have a lavish spread of food and drinks. It's a night where a lot of suburbanites, tourists, and people that generally never go out in the city suddenly come down to pay way too much for substandard parties and then later complain how they paid so much money and could barely get a drink or the food was not very good. I'll also say NYE in Chicago is always a bit of an amateur night. Pretty much the locals never bother with it. NYC gets a plethora of tourists that are spending the holidays there, and then go all out for the camping in Times Square thing. Plus, Chicagoans are not going to stand outside in the freezing cold all day just to see a star rise up a building, or a fireworks show along the river. There have been attempts to try to get some kind of big downtown thing happening, but it was always poorly planned, seemingly scraping the bottom of the barrel for any kind of acts or whoever to show up, and the worst part is that they make the actual good spot to be some kind of expensive VIP thing while all the average people had to stay far away in an area not very conducive to having a good time. The hard reality is that Chicago is not NYC, nor is it LA.
